Live in Italy while working remotely for clients or employers abroad. We prepare the consular file and guide the residence-permit stage after you arrive.

## Who this is for

- A foreign employer or clients already pay you remotely
- At least €24,789.93 a year, with a stable payment trail
- A degree or the required professional experience

The Italy DNV fits established remote work, not every online income.

Use this as a first filter. We confirm the route against your qualification, contracts and payment trail.

### The route is worth checking if

- You work remotely for an employer or clients outside Italy
- Your annual income clears €24,789.93
- You have a recognised degree or enough relevant experience
- You can show at least six months of real remote work

### Check another route if

- The income is passive and you do not plan to work
- The work is for an Italian company
- The contracts and bank deposits do not match

## Steps and timing

How to get the Italian Digital Nomad Visa with Relovisa.

One case manager coordinates the consular stage and the first residence-permit steps after arrival.

### 1. Check qualification and income

Before filing

We test the degree or experience, six months of remote work and the €24,789.93 income trail.

### 2. Build the document set

Before the consulate

Contracts, income, criminal record, insurance, housing, translations and the employer declaration are prepared in the consulate's order.

### 3. File at the Italian consulate

Appointment stage

You submit in the country where you legally live. We prepare you and coordinate the appointment where the jurisdiction permits it.

### 4. Receive the entry visa

Typically 30 to 60 days

After the authority decision, the long-stay visa lets you enter Italy and begin the local residence stage.

### 5. File the Post Office kit

Within 8 working days

After arrival we guide the residence-permit kit and prepare the originals for the local appointment.

### 6. Attend Questura

Commonly another 2 to 3 months

Fingerprinting and the permit decision complete the 12-month residence stage. Local queues vary.

## FAQ

### What is the Italian Digital Nomad Visa?

It is a 12-month renewable residence route for non-EU highly-qualified remote workers and self-employed professionals. It lets you live in Italy while working for clients or employers outside Italy.

### Who qualifies as a highly-qualified digital nomad?

You need a recognised degree of at least three years, or five years of relevant professional experience, or three years for IT and ICT specialists. You also need at least six months of documented remote work in the role.

### What is the minimum income requirement?

At least €24,789.93 a year. Some consulates quote €24,789. The income can come from a foreign employer, freelance clients or your own company outside Italy, and the payment trail must be stable.

### Do I need health insurance?

Yes. You need private health insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover, valid throughout Italy for the intended stay.

### How long does the process take?

The entry-visa decision commonly takes 30 to 60 days. After arrival, file the residence-permit kit within eight working days. The Questura stage commonly adds another two to three months, depending on local queues.

### Can I bring my family?

Yes. Your spouse and dependent children under 18 can apply for family residence permits. Your spouse can work locally. Additional financial requirements apply for each dependant.

### Do I pay tax in Italy?

More than 183 days in a year usually makes you Italian tax resident on worldwide income. The Digital Nomad Visa itself gives no tax break: the 2024 decree requires holders to request an Italian VAT number (partita IVA) and to comply with tax and contribution rules. Tax relief comes from a separate regime for new residents, below.

### Can I use the impatriate tax regime on the Digital Nomad Visa?

Often yes, if you meet its own conditions. Article 5 of Legislative Decree 209/2023 exempts 50% of employment or professional income produced in Italy, or 60% if you move with a minor child or have one during the regime, up to €600,000 a year, for five tax years. The Revenue Agency accepts remote work for a foreign employer or foreign clients (rulings 2/2026 and 82/2026). You must not have been Italian tax resident in the previous three years, need a three-year degree or five years of experience (three for ICT specialists) and must stay resident for four years, or the benefit is clawed back with interest.

### What does the impatriate regime not cover?

Business income (reddito d'impresa) is excluded, and the regime cannot be combined with the 15% flat regime (forfettario). Social contributions are still due. As a rough illustration, an employee on €60,000 pays about 14% to 17% in income tax and own contributions under the regime, against about 37% without it. Confirm your own numbers with an Italian tax adviser before you move.

### How does Italy compare with Spain and Portugal?

All three have remote-work routes, but the income floor, social-security evidence, tax options and residence-permit sequence differ. We compare the route against your actual contracts and move plan.

### Where do I apply?

At the Italian consulate that covers the country where you legally live. The initial DNV application is not made from inside Italy on a tourist or Schengen stay.
