[Book with Relovisa on Tobira](https://tobira.ai/@relovisa)

Live in Portugal on the remote work you already do. We connect the contract, invoices and matching bank movements into one consistent AIMA dossier.

## Who this is for

- You already work remotely for a company or clients outside Portugal
- €3,680 a month, shown with contracts and matching bank statements
- Partner, children and dependent parents move on the same file

D8 fits stable remote work, not every online income.

Use this as a first filter. We confirm the route against your contracts, deposits and family plan on the consultation.

### D8 is likely worth checking if

- You earn at least €3,680 a month from foreign remote work
- Your contracts and bank trail agree with each other
- You do not want a Portuguese employer
- Your work continues unchanged after the move

### Check another route if

- Most of your income is passive, which points to D7
- Your client income is irregular or below €3,680 a month
- Crypto receipts are the only income evidence you have
- You would rather hold a real Portuguese contract, which points to D3

## Steps and timing

How to get the Portugal D8 visa with Relovisa.

From eligibility review to residence permit, your dedicated case manager handles every step. The two authority timings below are ranges we have observed in 2026.

### 1. Income and route review

Before filing

We test the source, the monthly average and the continuity, and whether a Portuguese contract on the D3 route would protect you better.

### 2. Evidence build and NIF

Before the consulate

We prepare the forms, your NIF and the complete contract, invoice, bank and residence evidence set. A Portuguese bank account is required, and we send a step-by-step guide.

### 3. Consulate filing

30 to 60 days

You attend the appointment. The consulate reviews the complete application and issues a 4-month entry visa.

### 4. Move to Portugal

Inside the 4-month visa

You enter Portugal and prepare the originals for the residence appointment.

### 5. AIMA and the residence permit

9 to 18 months, 5 to 9 through regional offices

Biometrics and the residence permit follow after arrival. In 2026 this runs 9 to 18 months end to end in Lisbon and Porto and roughly 5 to 9 months through regional offices. The legal target is 90 days.

### 6. IFICI application

By 15 January of the year after you first become tax resident

If your activity qualifies we file the IFICI application on time. The tax authority decides.

## FAQ

### Is the D8 the same as the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes. Digital Nomad Visa is the commercial name introduced in October 2022 for the D8 residence visa.

### Do I need to live in Portugal full time?

You need at least 16 months in Portugal during each two-year permit period. We give you a residency-tracking framework so you do not lose status by accident.

### How long does the process actually take in 2026?

The consulate visa takes 30 to 60 days. The residence permit is the slow part: 9 to 18 months in Lisbon and Porto, roughly 5 to 9 months through regional offices. The legal target is 90 days. The visa lets you enter; the permit confirms residence.

### Can I apply for the D8 from inside Portugal?

No. The D8 residence permit is granted only to holders of a D8 residence visa issued by a Portuguese consulate, and remote workers have no exemption from that visa. You cannot switch inside Portugal from a visa-free entry, a Schengen visa or a temporary-stay D8. The old in-country routes, the expression of interest (closed in 2024) and the route for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries who entered without a residence visa (closed in October 2025), no longer take new applications. Apply at the consulate before you move: the residence visa is valid for four months and two entries, and within that time you file for the permit with AIMA.

### How do I prove €3,680 a month?

Usually with foreign employment contracts and payslips, or with freelance contracts, consistent invoices and matching deposits. A documented company-dividend trail can also be relevant. Passive income points to D7 instead. We structure the proof the way the consulate and AIMA expect to see it.

### Can I apply on crypto income?

Crypto receipts alone are usually refused. We help you turn crypto-derived earnings into a documented stream that AIMA accepts, either through registered freelance activity, or by switching to the D3 route with Portuguese payroll funded by a foreign employer.

### What about IFICI tax?

Only if your work qualifies. IFICI taxes qualifying employment or self-employment income at a flat 20% for 10 years, but only for listed highly qualified activities, typically research, higher-education teaching, certified startups and roles certified by the relevant agencies. Most general freelancers on the D8, such as designers, marketers or consultants invoicing foreign clients, do not qualify and pay progressive IRS rates. If you do qualify, the registration deadline is 15 January of the year after you first become Portuguese tax resident. The tax authority decides.

### Can my clients be outside the EU?

Yes. What matters is that the work is remote, the income is documented and the monthly trail clears the threshold. If your client base is unstable, we may point you to the D3 employment route instead.

### When should I choose D3 with a Portuguese contract instead?

Check D3 when your income is freelance and could be reclassified, when you earn below €3,680 a month, or when you want structured employment and the cleanest IFICI application.

### Can my family come with me on the D8?

Yes. Your spouse or de facto partner, minor children, dependent parents (yours or your spouse's) and dependent unmarried adult children who will study in Portugal can apply for accompanying residence visas at the same time as you. The consulate checks that your income covers the whole household. The two-year wait for family reunification is not part of this accompanying-visa route. Our fee is €990 per family member on top of the main file.

### Can my family join me later instead?

Yes, through family reunification, but since 23 October 2025 you must have held your residence permit for at least two years before you apply, or 15 months for a spouse or partner you lived with for at least 18 months before you moved. The wait does not apply to minor or incapacitated dependent children, or to a spouse or partner who is their other parent. The general exemption for families of highly qualified, investment and EU Blue Card permit holders does not cover the D8. Relatives already in Portugal can apply from inside the country only if they are in the exempt group, and family members admitted this way must follow a Portuguese language and civic values course that is checked when their permit is renewed.

### Can my spouse or partner work in Portugal?

Yes, once they hold a Portuguese residence permit: every residence-permit holder may take a job or be self-employed without a separate work authorisation. A family member admitted through reunification receives a permit of the same length as yours. It becomes independent of yours after two years, or straight away for a spouse or partner who has been with you for more than five years.

### When can I get permanent residence?

After five years on temporary residence permits: on the D8 that is the first two-year permit plus one three-year renewal. You also need means of subsistence, accommodation, basic Portuguese (an A2 certificate is one of the proofs AIMA accepts) and no prison sentence of more than one year in those five years, and AIMA asks for proof that your tax and social-security obligations are met. The alternative is EU long-term resident status, also available after five years of uninterrupted legal residence.

### How many years until Portuguese citizenship?

Ten years of legal residence, or seven for EU citizens and nationals of countries where Portuguese is an official language, under the nationality law in force since 19 May 2026. Interrupted periods can be added up if they fall within 12 years (9 for the seven-year group), and the time you spend waiting for AIMA to decide your residence application no longer counts. You also need a test or certificate showing enough Portuguese and knowledge of the culture, history and national symbols, knowledge of citizens' rights and duties and of how the state is organised, and the means to support yourself. The implementing regulation had not been updated by October 2026, so test details can still change.

### What happens if the visa is refused?

For a Portuguese case we file directly, if a refusal follows a complete document set you provided, we re-file once at no additional service fee, subject to your engagement terms. We do not guarantee approval; the authority decides.
