FAQs

Can I get a Digital Nomad visa if I own a business registered outside of Spain?
Yes, you can obtain a Digital Nomad residence permit if your company is registered outside Spain. The key requirement is that your main activity must be remote, and no more than 20% of your income can come from Spanish clients.
Do I need to live in Spain with a Digital Nomad residence permit?
While continuous residence is not mandatory, to qualify for permanent residency after 5 years, you cannot be absent from Spain for more than 10 months during that 5-year period.
What types of startups are considered promising for obtaining residency in Spain?
Startups should demonstrate innovation, economic value, and potential for job creation in Spain. Preference is given to technology projects in IT, environmental technologies, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence sectors.
Do I need to pay taxes in Spain with a Digital Nomad visa?
Yes, if you spend more than 183 days per year in Spain, you become a tax resident. If you're self-employed, your income will be subject to progressive tax rates. As an employee, you may be eligible for the Beckham Law tax regime, which offers a flat 24% rate for the first 6 years.
Can I apply for a Digital Nomad visa if I'm freelancing for multiple clients?
Yes, this is possible. The main requirement is demonstrating stable income from your activities and providing contracts with clients that verify your employment.
Do I need to rent accommodation to apply for residency?
For the initial application, you don't need a long-term rental contract. You can use temporary accommodation bookings (Booking, Airbnb) while waiting for approval. After receiving your NIE (tax number), you can then arrange long-term accommodation.
Is it mandatory to run a startup in Spain?
No, it's not mandatory. While Spain provides this opportunity, you're not required to open a company or operate a startup. After 3 years, you can modify your residence permit to a different category. The 3-year period will still count toward permanent residency and future citizenship.
