What changed in 2026 — updated for 2026

  • Blue Card — new thresholds from 1 January 2026. The standard salary floor is now €50,700/year gross. Shortage occupations (IT, engineering, medicine, mathematics, natural sciences, plus recent graduates within 3 years of their degree) qualify at €45,934.20/year.
  • Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) — new financial floor. Proof of funds is now €1,091/month or €13,092 on a blocked account for a one-year search permit (previously €12,324).
  • §18g — Blue Card for IT specialists without a degree. Introduced in 2023 and expanded through 2024–2025, this provision lets IT specialists qualify for a Blue Card with 3 years of relevant work experience in the past 7 years. A university degree is not required — the route is built for self-taught engineers and bootcamp graduates.
  • Sperrkonto (blocked account) for the Freelance Visa and general immigration purposes sits at €11,904 for 2025/26. Don't confuse this with the €13,092 Chancenkarte floor — they're two different requirements for two different permits.

FAQs

How quickly can I get a Blue Card residence permit?
The Blue Card process typically takes 1-2 months. After submitting all required documents and receiving approval from the German consulate, you'll get a national visa to enter Germany and start working. With a Blue Card, you can obtain permanent residence in just 21 months if you reach German language level B1.
What are the financial requirements for these visas?
Blue Card 2026: minimum gross salary of €50,700/year for standard occupations, €45,934.20/year for shortage occupations (IT, engineering, medicine, mathematics, natural sciences, recent graduates). Freelance Visa: €11,904 Sperrkonto (blocked account) for the main applicant and ~€5,952 per child (varies by Ausländerbehörde). Opportunity Card: €13,092 blocked account for one year or €1,091/month proof of income. Additional proof of financial stability may be required.
What benefits come with permanent residence after the Blue Card?
Permanent residence after 21 months grants you: unrestricted right to live and work in Germany, freedom to change employers or start your own business, path to German citizenship, full access to EU rights and privileges, free movement within the European Union.
Which professions qualify for the Freelance Visa?
The visa is designed for self-employed professionals in fields such as IT and software development, architecture and design, marketing and consulting, media and creative industries, and other Freiberufler categories. You must have verified qualifications and experience in your field.
What if my degree isn't recognized in Germany for the Opportunity Card?
If your degree isn't recognized, you can still apply for the Opportunity Card through the points system, which evaluates age, work experience, language skills, and connection to Germany. You'll need to provide alternative proof of qualifications and meet the financial requirement (€13,092 blocked-account deposit for 2026). A separate under-used route for IT specialists is the Blue Card under §18g AufenthG: 3 years of relevant experience in the past 7 years qualifies in place of a university degree — no diploma required.
Can I get permanent residence with a Blue Card while working as a freelancer?
No, the Blue Card is exclusively for highly qualified professionals with German employment contracts. If you want to work as a freelancer, you should apply for the Freelance Visa instead, which offers its own path to permanent residence after 3 years.
