How Relovisa's Portuguese payroll works

Portuguese employment, fully managed

You hold a D3 visa, you live in Portugal, your employment is structured through Relovisa's Portuguese employer-of-record service. Standard Portuguese employment contract, Segurança Social registration, IRS withholding, Portuguese labor protections.

IFICI tax built into setup

D3 + qualifying highly-qualified activity = 20% flat tax for 10 years. We handle the 15 January application as part of the payroll service.

Single point of accountability

One team handles your employment contract, monthly payroll, social security filings, IRS withholding, and D3 visa compliance — coordinated end-to-end, not split across vendors.

Recurring, transparent pricing

One-time setup fee covers contract and registration. Monthly service fee covers payslips, social security filings, IRS withholding, ongoing compliance. Your gross salary is what we agree; net is what you actually receive after standard Portuguese deductions.

Why this matters in 2026

  • AIMA tightened employer review

Post-28 April 2025, AIMA scrutinizes employer credibility for D3 filings. Proper Portuguese employment compliance — full Segurança Social registration, IRS withholding, and labor-law adherence — is essential.

  • Multi-year operational track record

Relovisa has been running Portuguese employer-of-record engagements for several years, with active Segurança Social filings, IRS payroll, and accounting infrastructure in Portugal.

  • Single point of accountability

Employment, payroll, social security, IRS withholding, and D3 visa compliance — coordinated end-to-end by one team instead of split across multiple vendors.

  • Tax + visa coordinated together

IFICI 20% flat tax application is filed by the same team that handles your employment contract and Segurança Social registration — no hand-off gaps, no missed January deadline.

FAQs

Who is this product for?
D3 visa applicants who need Portuguese employer-of-record support. Typical cases: (1) You have an existing foreign employer or your own foreign company, and that entity doesn't have (or doesn't want to open) Portuguese operations. (2) You want a single team handling employment, payroll, and visa compliance instead of three separate vendors. (3) You want IFICI tax application built into the setup from day one.
What's the actual salary structure?
We agree your gross monthly salary in EUR. Standard Portuguese employment deductions apply: 11% employee social security, IRS withholding per Portuguese tax brackets. For IFICI-eligible roles (most D3 cases), IRS withholding is the 20% flat rate after IFICI approval. We provide monthly payslips, year-end IRS support, and A1 certificate filing if needed.
Can my own foreign company engage Relovisa's payroll service to employ me in Portugal?
Yes — this is a common structure. Your foreign company (Delaware, BVI, etc.) engages Relovisa's Portuguese employer-of-record service. Relovisa then employs you in Portugal at the agreed gross salary, handling Segurança Social, IRS withholding, monthly payroll. Your foreign company retains its profits, you receive Portuguese-domiciled income, social security, and benefits. We coordinate the inter-company structure with your accountant.
What's the minimum salary I need to be paid through the payroll?
For D3 compliance: at least 1.5× Portuguese national average (~€2,100/month) for most roles, €2,500–3,000/month for managerial roles. We structure your gross salary to meet the relevant D3 threshold.
Is IFICI guaranteed for D3 + payroll?
IFICI is not automatic — you apply by 15 January after your first full Portuguese tax-residency year. Eligibility requires you to perform a qualifying activity (most D3 roles do). We handle the application as part of the payroll service.
What if I want to leave the payroll later?
30-day notice on the monthly service. We provide standard Portuguese employment-exit documentation. Your visa status continues until renewal — at renewal, you'll need a new D3 employer (or switch visa categories) to maintain residency.
Can I use this if I live in another EU country?
The publicly-priced product covers D3 holders resident in Portugal. We do handle cross-border setups in specific cases — talk to us about your specific situation.
How quickly can the setup happen?
6–8 weeks for employment contract, social security registration, NIF, and full dossier. Then consulate processing for the D3 visa itself (30–60 days). Total: 3–4 months to "ready to enter Portugal as employed D3 holder."
